Viktor Orbán replies
National debt is the only reason for the changes, since a badly designed system has left the country up to its ears in debt.
According to Viktor Orbán the pension system must be transformed in the interests of the Hungarian economy. In his brief video message that appeared on Facebook on Sunday he also said that there will not be any kind of pension tax and in the future on-going expenditure would not be paid from pension contributions.
On Saturday the prime minister had announced that a series called "The Prime Minister Replies" would start on his own Facebook page, where he would answer people's questions in video messages. He went on to announce that an OVTV (Orbán Viktor TV) camera crew would be regularly going around the country giving people the opportunity to raise questions on topical issues in connection with the changes taking place in the country, the future and the work of the government.
In his first video message Viktor Orbán talked about the reform of the pension system. He stressed that the only reason for change was the national debt. According to the prime minister the earlier reform of the Hungarian pension system had resulted in "the country getting up to its ears in debt". He said that a huge amount of money had had to be transferred to private pension funds, while the economy was not producing the income to balance this, thus the government had taken out a huge amount of credit.
He added that this credit was weighing down on us in the "form of a mountain of debt" making our lives almost impossible. According to the prime minister, if this had gone on, it would have buried the whole economy, our children's future, our present and the pensions of those already in retirement. Viktor Orbán pointed out that it had been necessary to intervene in order to prevent this from happening.
Regarding the restructuring of the system he said that whoever is leaving the private pension system to return to the state system and by so doing loses out, will have those losses compensated by the state, "as if they had never left the state system". He also said that whoever had a yield and returned by 31 January would be allowed to take out that profit tax free.
He said that anyone leaving the private pension system and joining the state pension system would continue to have a personal account. At the same time, he drew attention to the fact that a personal account would only be a guarantee in the state pension system and not in the private pension system. Keeping personal accounts in the state pension system means security and a guarantee, as well as the chance to track the contributions, said the prime minister.
According to Viktor Orbán, in the new system pensioners will receive their pensions, those about to retire will be able to rely on the pension system and young people will have a reliable, clear course ahead of them guaranteeing security in their old age.
In his video message the prime minister asked the people to trust the government and Parliament's decision because this economic policy will allow Hungary to reduce and eventually eliminate national debt.
